Challenge

An international oil and gas company, pursuing new opportunities in North Africa, needed to develop a social investment strategy to support country entry in a way that balanced stakeholder expectations with long-term commercial objectives. To do so, the company sought to understand the needs and development priorities of the government.

Approach

KRL conducted in-depth research and multiple field missions, engaging government officials, business leaders, NGOs, and academics to build a database of over 150 industry stakeholders. Our analysis pinpointed that youth unemployment and education were some of the most pressing priorities. Based on KRL’s assessment, the company developed a concept paper for its social investment strategy with an emphasis on building capacity within the state oil company and supporting feeder schools specializing in petroleum engineering.

Impact

KRL helped the company forge partnerships with other investors in the sector, state-owned companies, the U.S. Fulbright Commission, USAID, and leading NGOs, ultimately securing widespread buy-in and over $1.2 million in contributions for its high-impact social investment project.
